HIKING REGION AND SKIARENA WILDKOGEL - THE NATIONAL PARK HOHE TAUERN IN FOCUS
Often referred to as the mountain with the best panorama of the area, the Wildkogel (2,225 m) does not only allow views on the most imposing mountain giants of the Venediger Group, but also on the last extensively conserved natural landscape of the Eastern Alps: the National Park Hohe Tauern. A modern 6-passenger gondola-lift carries keen hikers up to the mountain station of the Ski- and Hiking Arena Wildkogel, where a natural adventure can be expected at every turn. In winter the friendliest ski area of Austria spoils its visitors with great slopes and a fantastic ski-run down to the valley.
HIKING - GLACIERING - COPPERING
"Adventure and experience" is the motto of the hiking programme in Neukirchen, which focuses on the untouched nature of the National Park Hohe Tauern and the 3,000 metre peaks with their impressive glaciers. Accompanied by certified mountain guides you can expect a fascinating nature tour. We especially recommend the Großvenediger Tour and the Glacier Safari in the Obersulzbachtal, on which you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the formation and movement of glaciers and moraines. The boldest among you can rope down into a crevasse.
Neukirchen also provides a nice and extensive programme for your children, which includes for example the Afternoon or Saga Tour, the National Park Day and the Nature Diashow.
"Glueck auf" they say on one of our hiking tours, using the old miners' greeting. You pass the canyon waterfall and walk the old miners' trail of the Untersulzbachtal to the historic Copper Mines Hochfeld, one of the most interesting and substantial exhibition mines in Austria.
History of the Copper Mines Hochfeld
From 1500 onwards copper was mined recurringly in Neukirchen. It is worthwhile visiting those tunnel systems, which are the result of long years of troublesome manual work.
When the mines were upgraded for tourist purposes the architects paid particular attention to the preservation of the original historic character. They were able to open 1,200 metres of the over 4 km long tunnels and shafts of the Copper Mines Hochfeld to the public.
On the guided tours through these exhibition mines you will receive descriptive information about ores and minerals and the associated history of copper mining. You will learn firsthand about the hard life of the miners during the last centuries.
PARAGLIDING OR HANG GLIDING
Our flying school has always produced a lot of good and successful pilots. Every year there are international competitions of para- and hang gliders on Wildkogel. Due to the ideal infrastructure the Paragliding WM 99 took place in Neukirchen.
TENNIS AND SWIMMING
In Neukirchen and its neighbouring villages you will find several well-kept tennis courts. Have fun in the sun at our lakes, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and choose between various fun activities for you and your kids.
PURE CULTURE
Local cultural associations such as Tauriska, the Leopold-Kohr Academy, the Steinberg-Thoma-Museum or Salzburger Heimatwerk arrange on-going events, symposia, exhibitions and courses throughout the year and offer a diversified cultural programme. The programme of the cultural centre Cinétheatro in Neukirchen contains cinema, theatre and cabaret.
