High up in the Obersulzbach Valley
A challenging hike to Seebachsee Lake
The hike to Seebachsee Lake is one of the most impressive tours in the Obersulzbach Valley and leads right into the mountain world of Hohe Tauern National Park. It is ideal for experienced hikers looking for a more challenging tour with alpine meadows, mountain streams, panoramic views and a peaceful mountain lake.
The starting point is the Hopffeldboden car park, which is easy to reach by car. Shortly before Gasthof Siggen, turn right, cross the Obersulzbach stream and then follow the well-maintained forest trail into the valley. After about half an hour, you reach the start of the Jägerpfad trail towards Seebachalm.
At first, the route leads uphill along a widened path with pleasant switchbacks. It then continues over roots and rocks, through forest, open sections and alpine scenery up to the mountain pasture. From there, the hike leads across wide alpine meadows to the Seebach stream, which you cross via a narrow bridge. Seebachsee Lake is now not far away.
Once you reach your destination, a truly special place awaits you in the heart of the Hohe Tauern: a quiet mountain lake, surrounded by impressive peaks and the peaceful calm of the national park. Seebachsee Lake is the perfect place for a longer break – to let nature work its magic and recharge your batteries.
The descent leads via Monau towards Berndlalm and Kampriesenalm. From there, you follow a well-maintained forest road back to the Hopffeldboden car park.
Tipp: E-Bike & hike to Seebachsee Lake
If you would like to shorten the long approach a little, this tour is also very well suited as an e-bike & hike option. You can ride your e-bike from the valley into the Obersulzbach Valley towards Berndlalm and Postalm, and start the hike higher up. The route via Monau is especially recommended – both for the way up and the way back. The trail starts on the right-hand side, shortly after Postalm.
This makes the tour much more comfortable and significantly reduces the actual walking time. But it still does not turn into an easy stroll: sure-footedness, good hiking shoes and a decent level of fitness are still important. In return, there is more time to look around, take it all in and enjoy – and that is exactly what Seebachsee Lake is all about.
Please note:
This hike is more demanding than the short family walks in the Obersulzbach Valley and is especially suitable for sure-footed guests with good fitness. With the e-bike & hike option, the long approach and return become much easier; however, the alpine hiking section still remains a proper mountain tour.
