Treasure hunt in the National Park
The Emerald Valley Habachtal
The Habachtal near Bramberg am Wildkogel is one of the most special side valleys in the Hohe Tauern National Park. It is best known as the ‘Emerald Valley’: it is home to one of Europe’s most famous emerald deposits. Visitors to the valley can enjoy a varied mix of alpine nature, rushing mountain streams, waterfalls, alpine meadows and genuine moments of discovery.
The starting point for a trip to the Habachtal is the Habachtal car park. A particular bonus is that access to the valley is also possible via the valley taxi and is included with the National Park SummerCard. This makes it easy to plan your trip – whether it’s a relaxed family hike, an enjoyable day out in nature or a little treasure hunt in the mountains of the Hohe Tauern.
Hiking in the Smaragd Valley
The Habachtal is ideal for families, leisure seekers and nature lovers. Depending on the route chosen, the trails range from easy to moderate and lead through an impressive landscape of woodland, alpine pastures, rocks, water and mountain panoramas. Time and again, beautiful views open up onto waterfalls, the clear Habachbach stream and the surrounding peaks.
The Smaragdweg trail into the Habachtal is particularly recommended. As they walk alongside the rushing stream, hikers of all ages can learn more about the valley’s mineral world. For children, this turns the hike into a little adventure: discovering stones, observing nature, collecting stamps or simply walking through the valley with their eyes wide open.
